SimCity Finally Back Offline

"They said it wasn’t possible. They said it couldn’t be done. It’s just over a year now since its launch, but SimCity is now officially free of its always-online shackles.

EA has finally deployed the crucial update, meaning would-be town planners can now get simming and citying to their hearts content, without the pesky DRM getting in the way of their efforts to turn EAville into a gigantic landfill…
SimCity Finally Back Offline

The fix has been packaged in with the new update 10, and will allow SimCity to be booted up in Origin’s offline mode - once you’ve connected and downloaded the update of course. All the region maps are available in the new single-player mode, as well as multiple cities. Anything that requires a persistent internet connection though won’t work - including Leaderboards, Citylog, Achievements, Friends List, Player Profile, the Region Wall and region invites.

SimCity launched to a fair bit of controversy last year, as a trifecta of game-crippling problems saw the return of a once-great franchise brought crashing to its knees. A dangerous cocktail of server outages, always-online DRM, and limited city sizes forced SimCity fans to brandish their burning pitchforks and march on EA HQ.

Server outages became a problem of the past pretty quickly once the mass-exodus of players occurred, while this latest update finally means that SimCity is fully playable without an internet connection."
